SYC logo  SYC Members Attend a Meeting with DEP in Stillwater

Seven SYC members were among 50 people who attended the two hour March 12th meeting with NJ DEP representatives from Trenton, SLWA
members, Park Superintendent Blanca, Regional Superintendent Steve Ellis, and local residents.

The challenges of weed control, harvesting and protection of endangered species were topics that were discussed, sometimes emotionally.

Trenton officials outlined their plans to contract for a study of the lake for 2008 and many members of the audience expressed frustration with the pace of any progress.

In response to the question why, since the DEP has a history of relocating bear and beaver and eagles eggs, they  couldn't also relocate the aquatic endangered plants to a sheltered cove, the reply from Natural Lands Management representative Bob Cartica was: "Because plants have roots!"

On a positive note, Weed Harvesting and a winter drawdown will be permitted for 2008.  This returns us to where we were in 2006.

The American Lotus were discussed at length.  Swartswood Lake is one of only two known locations of this aquatic plant listed as endangered in NJ.  Any plant with less than five known existing locations in NJ is listed as endangered.  Trenton claims Swartswood Lake has five of the 300 aquatic plants listed as endangered in NJ.

Cooling off after the meeting took place at The Boathouse till closing time.

SYC logo  Lake Association special message

Update!  Please note location change ...

The NJDEP meeting with SLWA (Swartswood Lakes and Watershed Association) will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 at the Camp Lou Henry Hoover. Initially, the SLWA intended to hold the meeting at the Stillwater Municipal Building.  The change was made because of Stillwater Municipal Building occupany limitations.

NJDEP has restored the weed harvesting program for year 2008. NJDEP plans to conduct a macrophite study during 2008 to determine what endangered aquatic plant species exist in the lakes and based upon that information and other available data, determine if the weed harvesting program should  be altered.

The meeting will be our opportunity to discuss the details of the program, possible scenarios based upon continued studies, the long term NJDEP approach to Swartswood Lakes, alternate approaches to aquatic plant preservation, wheteher or not the endangered aquatic species affect extends to other lakes and resources, and any other relevant questions. Because NJDEP is offering the opportunity for this discussion with SLWA and other lake stakeholders you should plan to attend. This should provide awareness of what may occur in future years and help you to be prepared for those possibilities. SLWA & others should defend the lakes as needed and support the DEP's approach when SLWA concurs.

Stillwater Township has reserved Thursday March 27 as an alternate date should it be necessary. Although this winter has been mild, sometimes the worst snow storms occur in March.

Respectfully submitted,
Paul Adamski - Vice President of SLWA
